Hooking up vs. Dating- Caroline Christy

Hooking up vs. Dating

When trying to find a blog topic to write this one seemed really interesting to write about, also it seemed like a good one to add both some facts and my opinion.  In todays society some people think that dating is a lost art and that teenagers only hook-up but I do not believe that is true. I think that some people are more prone to relationships and dating while some more likely to hook up.  When researching dating there were some definitions for it but none really seemed to fit. Dating: is a form of courtship consisting of social activities done by two people with the aim of each assessing the other's suitability as a partner in an intimate relationship or as a spouse.[1] However that definition seems old and out dated. I think the criteria of dating should be left up those who are in the relationship. Sometimes dating means the two are boyfriend and girlfriend, sometimes it means they are exclusive and sometimes it means that they are still on the market. As anything there are always pros and cons to each side. Hooking up is easy, no attachments, and no drama. Dating takes work, and time; lots of fighting and communication, but in the end dating can have better outcomes such as finding your husband. Whereas in hooking up the only thing you might find in the end is an STD.
The history of dating began with courtship, if a man liked a woman he would drop by her house and they would spend time together usually in the presence of their parents, so they may first get to know each other emotionally and intellectually before they got to know each other physically.[2] A hookup culture is one that accepts and encourages casual sexual encounters focused on physical pleasure without necessarily including emotional bonding. [3] Hooking up comes with many more risks than dating does. Hooking up can lead to unplanned pregnancy, and STD’s. Although dating can lead to those things as well but at least you know with who, and you hopefully have someone to help you through these problems. The problem with hooking up is mainly the aftermath, of course I’m sure it was fun while it lasted but the morning after you might be full of regret and having to make sure you are not pregnant. I personally am more on the dating side just because it has many benefits but also ups and downs. However some people believe that hooking up is just part of the “college experience”. Which ever path people choose to go down they need to stay safe.
